Membership Classifications
Please read the 2008 membership letter.

SOMOS Lapel Pins - In order to encourage membership renewal, every person who joins or renews his/her membership by 1 August 2008 will receive a free SOMOS lapel pin (pictured at right) at the annual meeting in Las Vegas. Also points towards the annual Captain's Cup will be awarded for the service with the highest percent membership - GO NAVY! SOMOS has five (5) Membership Classifications:

  • Active
    • Staff: $100
    • Fellow: $100
    • Resident: $50
  • Allied: $100
  • Honorary
  • Emeritus
  • Inactive

Active Members (Regular or Resident) are active duty, reserve, retired, or honorably discharged orthopaedic surgeons or resident orthopaedic surgeons in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. "Active" does not reflect current military status.
Regular Active Members pay dues, may hold office, and have voting rights.

Allied Members are orthopaedic surgeons in foreign military services.
Allied Members pay dues, are not eligible to vote, and cannot hold office.

Honorary Members are orthopaedic surgeons, physicians or scientists not eligible for Active Membership who have gained professional prominence by his/her contribution to the advancement of orthopaedic surgery in general or to SOMOS in particular. The Board of Directors approves Honorary Members.
Honorary Members do not pay dues, are not eligible to vote, and cannot hold office.

Emeritus Members are Active Members who have reached the age of 65, have been a SOMOS Member for 25 years, have retired from active practice, and have requested "Emeritus" status from the Board of Directors.
Emeritus Members do not pay dues, are eligible to vote, but cannot hold office.

Inactive Members are members who have retired from medical practice because of disability, or for some other acceptable reason, and are not eligible for Emeritus Membership or members who are financially unable to pay dues because of hardship, or other reasons acceptable to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors will review each Inactive Member's status yearly and those no longer eligible for Inactive Membership shall be reassigned to the appropriate category of membership.
Inactive Members may attend and participate in scientific meetings; they do not pay dues, are not eligible to vote and cannot hold office.
