Purpose and Objectives
The purpose of this course is to bring military ophthalmologists together to share
their knowledge and experience so that all may provide the best care to their warfighters.
At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to:
-
Discuss the latest scientific research being done at military refractive surgery
centers.
-
Discuss current medical issues in refractive surgery such as wavefront-guided ablations
and prevention of ectasia.
-
Describe current policies for refractive surgery in the U.S. Military and international
militaries.
Background:
The Navy Refractive Surgery Program has held three Navy-wide refractive surgery
meetings where our latest scientific studies and updates from each refractive surgery
center were shared. Business plans, Navy policy, and future goals were also discussed
with all the key Navy ophthalmologists present. Refractive surgery leaders from
the Air Force and Army attended the most recent meeting, held in San Antonio in
January, 2007, and it was evident that the military refractive surgery program could
only benefit from shared knowledge and experience.
